I am Doug Stainbrook, the artist behind
Sly Fox Art Pyrography. After many years of drawing, oil
painting, artistic engraving, and woodworking, I finally
discovered what I was looking for--the art of pyrography. For
me, it's the most enjoyable and fulfilling art form I've found.
The reason we call it pyrography, rather than just wood
burning, is because there are many other mediums besides wood
that can be artistically burned. My favorite materials to work
with are wood, leather, and heavy paper.
I started my
journey in pyrography in October of 2017. I signed up for a
three-day class in Townsend, TN that was taught by one of the
most renown pyrographers in the country,
Michele Parsons. She
introduced me to the basics of pyrography through hands-on
projects, where I learned about the burning equipment and
fundamental techniques. From there, I took off on my own with
pyrography and have never looked back. Since starting to sell my
work in early 2018, I've sold over 500 pieces.
One of my
proudest accomplishments in 2020 was being recognized in a
magazine for one of my wood burnings created during quarantine.
The editor saw my submission after soliciting contributions for
an article on their Facebook page. She reached out to me, and I
was thrilled to be chosen as one of the featured artists in the
article.
